Memories of Lake Geneva

For over 50 years Lake Geneva, WI was the home for the encampment offering families a week of spiritual and physical renewal. We've collected many written memories from attendees. Here are their thoughts...

Master Sailor Brent Reeves

One year Brent Reeves said to me, "Hey, would you like to rent a small sail boat and go out for the afternoon." It sounded like fun to me so we set a time to meet at the dock. When I arrived Brent assured me the boat was all set up and ready to go!! (I did not double check that information...amistake I never made again). After a few minutes on the lake I decided it was time to change directions and head back to shore. The command was given so no one would get hit by the sail; the sail position was chnaged, but the boat continued straight ahead. After about an hour of totally uncontrollable sailing I began to ask questions of Brent. When we go to centerboard he said, "Centerboard? What is a centerboard?" Hours later Gilligan and I were towed back to shore.

Lake Geneva Memories

How, in a few words, do you tell about meeting your life mate and mentor to heaven. Portia Henderson and Joe Mason were casual friends for several years until 1998. I wrote her a post card asking if shw would like to sing a duet with me. In practicing that music we got to know each other better -- much better. In January 1999 we gegan dating. We got engaged August 1999 and married October 23, 1999. Thank you Lake Geneva for giving me a beautiful Christian woman to help lead me to heaven. What a wonderful blessing she hasd been to me and to everyone she touches.

The Lost Floyd Rose

One year Vernon Boyd was getting really nervous because one of the speakers, Floyd Rose was not here and it was almost time to start Monday night program. Portia and I werewalking around the campus when a very tired and frustrated Floyd Rose shouted to us, "so you know where the Church oif Christ group is meeting?" He had missed his shuttle from the Chicago airport, gotten a ride form a total stranger who ws coming this direction, and by the time he arrived here was fit to be tied.

That night in his talk he remarked how easy it was to get lost so the next night he had signs and crepe paper ribbon leading him from the speaker building to his cabin.
